Psychogate getting a little too Psycho?

It’s with a heavy heart and a large dose of reluctance that I write this blog. But it has to happen for the sake of my tailgate.

The tailgate started as a quaint gathering of a few friends many years ago. Over the years it has grown and thanks to my involvement on Twitter it blew up. And since people started calling it Psychogate it’s taken on a life of its own. As someone who loves to throw a good party I never tried to slow it down, if anything I helped fuel the fire. But the time has come to reassess…

It feels like the tailgate has gotten out of control. At the last tailgate (Hawaii) I saw people standing on top of my cornhole game and standing on top of my coolers. Standing on top of cornhole??? Who the hell does that? The USC themed Battle Shots game which I took great pains to build for the tailgate also got trashed at the last tailgate. And that only scratches the surface. This isn’t Animal House…

Perhaps the tailgate is a victim of its own success but I’m calling on everyone to help maintain order or I’ll have to take drastic measures to maintain order.

My frustration stems from the fact that hosting the tailgate costs thousands of dollars and countless hours of upkeep and preparation. Partnerships with the companies I patronize and Syco Wear t-shirt sales help cover the expenses. But the time I lovingly pour into the tailgate leads to a lot of frustration when people act recklessly. Or when people turn a blind eye to what is happening right in front of them.

So I’m writing this to ask for your help in maintaining order and for your help with setup & clean up.

First of all, this isn’t my tailgate. I host the tailgate but I do it for you. This is YOUR tailgate! Treat it as your own. You are all stakeholders and if you have ever made a contribution of food, drink or money then you literally have some ownership in this.

There are a few little things I’m going to ask you to do that will make a huge difference. First and foremost, if you see something SAY something. I can’t see everything going on and I don’t want to be the police. But if you see someone doing something they shouldn’t please say something to that person. Or at the very least bring it to my attention.

Use the trash cans. One of my biggest pet peeves is all the plastic shot glasses that are left all over the place. We go through hundreds of them at every game and it creates a giant, sticky mess when people don’t throw them away. Same goes for cups, plates, napkins, bottles, cans, etc. If you’re done with something put it in the trash. If you see something that belongs in the trash pick it up and throw it away. I spend a lot of my day picking up people’s trash and I shouldn’t have to do that.

Accidents happen. If you spill something wipe your mess up. If you see a mess left by someone else, get some paper towels and clean it up.

Crowd control has also become an issue. If you see someone who doesn’t look like they belong raiding the tailgate point them out to me or ask them who they are. The tailgate is an open party (for now) but it has to be within reason. The tailgate is open to anyone who knows about it and comes to campus with Psychogate as their destination. It’s not open to every passerby who sees a party and feels like inviting themselves in. I don’t want random people that nobody knows helping themselves to our goods. These are the people that tend to cause the most problems, especially towards the end of the tailgate when the band shows up. If you are new to the tailgate just introduce yourself to someone so we know who you are and so we can properly welcome you!

To make a long story short, when the time comes to break down I don’t want it to look like a hurricane tore through the tailgate or like I just hosted a huge frat party.

Speaking of break down, this is an area where a lot more people could help out. Huge thanks for the people that always stay late and help with cleanup. But there are people who have been to every single tailgate for the last couple of years yet have never helped clean up. On the other hand there are some people who are there at 6am to help me set up and are there at the bitter end to help with clean up. Serious Psychogate MVPs! If I could get everyone to come early or stay late just once a season it would make a huge difference!

If you have never been to the tailgate before I know I’m making it sound like it’s absolute mayhem. I don’t want to scare you away, it’s not mayhem, it’s a lot of fun! It’s just that over the course of a 6-12 hour tailgate (yes, sometimes it lasts 12 hours) a lot of little things add up to a huge mess by the end of the day.

I am in no way changing my open tailgate policy (for now). I enjoy meeting new people, especially Trojan fans whom I have interacted with online! Please do not let this deter you from joining us on game days! I have always said that it’s the people who make a tailgate great, it’s not the gear. I just want to make sure Psychogate is chock full of great people and great gear so we can all have a great time!

If you have any suggestions on ways to address any of these issues, or general suggestions to improve the tailgate, please share them with me in the comments section or by email.

Thanks & Fight On!

I think having a trash bag at the tailgate will definitely help. Tape a plastic grocery bags or two to your food table, and one to the bar and/or the Jager table. Some people don’t want to walk 3 steps to the trash bin. This will help them not throw it on the ground. We can just swoop by and empty it when it’s full. I don’t know why.

I’m sorry folks are being disrespectful to your stuff, Roy. I have never showed up early or stayed late at Psychogate, but I do my part while I’m there with trash patrol. I’m not your Jager troll for nutthin’! 🙂
